Here's how it works: Water at the anode becomes the source of H+ ions, and the PEM facilitates the migration of these ions from the anolyte to the cathode. At the cathode, H+ ions combine with electrons from the power supply through a reduction reaction, forming H atoms. These atoms pair up to create molecular hydrogen, H₂ gas.
Any residual oxygen or chlorine gas, produced at the anode through the oxidation of hydroxide, is effectively vented when the lid is removed or through the bottom on our model.
